Watercolour 15 x 11 A Master carver who escaped from Mao during the Revolution in China now carving and living in Tai O, a small village on Discovery Island, Hong Kong. While visiting the village, we found him carving in a tiny shack the size of a small closet. Surrounding the opening of his workshop were these amazing masks. I found a driftwood carving half hidden under an old rag and fell in love with it. Opening my wallet, I showed him what I had, indicating I wanted to buy the piece. I knew it was worth much more than I had. He looked deeply into my eyes and nodded his head. One of those amazing moments.I have the piece now in my living room. To honour him, I had to paint this man and his masks.
